Missing 2-Year-Old Found Safe

The child was located Wednesday evening in a heavily wooded area of Modoc County, about 1.5 miles from home.

MODOC COUNTY, Calif. — A missing 2-year-old child was found safe Wednesday evening after a search in the Cal Pines subdivision of Modoc County.

According to the Modoc County Sheriff’s Office, dispatch received a report of the missing child at approximately 7 p.m. on May 14.

Deputies responded and coordinated a search with assistance from the Modoc County Sheriff’s Posse, California Highway Patrol, CAL FIRE engine crews, Modoc Medical Center Ambulance, a SEMSA helicopter, a CAL FIRE helicopter, and additional CAL FIRE drone support from Susanville.

Shortly after deputies arrived, searchers found footprints near an intersection about a quarter mile from where the child was last seen.

At approximately 8:50 p.m., the child was located by a Modoc County Sheriff’s Posse member and a CHP officer. The sheriff’s office said she was found about 1.5 miles from her residence in a heavily wooded area, about 40 to 50 yards off the roadway.

The Modoc Medical Center Ambulance crew evaluated the child, warmed her up, and treated her for very minor injuries.

“I want to thank all the men and women from the many agencies that assisted with the search and the successful recovery of the child,” said Sheriff Tex Dowdy.

The Modoc County Sheriff’s Office also thanked assisting agencies, volunteers, and community members who helped bring the search to a successful conclusion.
