Early Morning Fire Causes Major Damage in Bend
Smoke alarm credited with helping resident safely evacuate
BEND, Ore. — An early morning structure fire Saturday caused significant damage to a home in Bend, but the occupant safely escaped after being alerted by a smoke alarm, according to Bend Fire & Rescue.
At approximately 5:07 a.m. on March 28, a 911 caller reported a fire near Thomas Drive and Airpark Drive. Crews arrived within eight minutes and found a single-story residence with fire venting through the roof. Firefighters quickly knocked down the blaze, and the resident declined assistance from the American Red Cross.
Investigators determined the fire originated in the attic space near the stove pipe for a pellet stove. Officials said heat from the stove pipe ignited nearby insulation and structural members, allowing the fire to spread throughout the attic. The blaze ultimately caused the roof and portions of the ceiling to collapse into much of the living space.
Damage estimates were approximately $400,000 to the structure and $80,000 to the contents, which included a vehicle parked inside the garage at the time of the fire.
Fire officials emphasized that working smoke alarms played a critical role in allowing the occupant to evacuate safely. Bend Fire & Rescue encourages residents to ensure smoke alarms are operational and offers free consultations for those needing assistance.
