SOU Beach Volleyball Celebration Set

Southern Oregon University will hold a May 18 parade and trophy presentation in Ashland to celebrate the Raiders’ first NAIA beach volleyball national title.

ASHLAND - Southern Oregon University will celebrate its national championship beach volleyball team with a parade and trophy presentation on Monday, May 18.

The celebration is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m., with the team parading from the corner of Mountain Avenue and Siskiyou Boulevard to the front of Lithia Motors Pavilion, where a trophy presentation will be held.

The Raiders captured the program’s first national title April 25, defeating defending champion Ottawa University of Arizona to win the NAIA Beach Volleyball Invitational. The championship came in just the fourth season of SOU beach volleyball.

Southern Oregon finished the season with a 24-3 record under head coach Paul Elliott, an SOU Hall of Famer who was named NAIA Coach of the Year.

In addition to the national title, the Raiders also won the Cascade Conference regular season and tournament championships.

SOU’s championship season included several national honors. Grace Gulbrandsen and Tessa Zimmermann were named the NAIA Pair of the Year, while Molly Grace and Kira Sandoval earned All-American recognition.

The May 18 event will give the campus and Ashland community an opportunity to recognize the team’s historic season and celebrate the Raiders’ first beach volleyball national championship.
