Texas Fugitive Arrested Near Agness

Sheriff Ward says Kenneth Leatherwood was found camping in a heavily wooded area near Lucas Lodge and taken into custody without incident.

AGNESS, Ore. — A fugitive wanted out of Texas was arrested Tuesday near Agness after a weeklong search, according to the Curry County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff John Ward said Curry County deputies, an Oregon State Trooper and six U.S. Marshals located Kenneth Leatherwood at about 12:35 p.m. Tuesday, June 23. Authorities said Leatherwood was found camping in a heavily wooded area near Lucas Lodge.

Leatherwood was wanted in Texas on a felony warrant related to child sex crimes, according to the sheriff’s office.

The search began after Leatherwood allegedly fled from Curry County law enforcement on June 16. Authorities said they had learned Leatherwood was in the Agness area and was operating a stolen vehicle.

After a week of searching, Leatherwood was taken into custody without incident.

The sheriff’s office said Leatherwood’s dog was also found in good condition and will be returned to Leatherwood’s family.

Ward thanked the Oregon State Police, OSP SWAT team, U.S. Marshals and the Agness community for their help during the search.

“We would also like to express our thanks to the Agness community and beyond for their diligence, cooperation and patience,” Ward said in the updated release.
