Man Killed on Highway 97 While Trying to Catch Dog

Oregon State Police say Scott Henry Beggio was struck near Chemult after his dog ran into the road.

CHEMULT, Ore. — A Klamath Falls man died Monday night after being struck by a commercial vehicle on Highway 97 near Chemult, according to Oregon State Police.

OSP said troopers responded at 10:07 p.m. Monday, June 22, to a vehicle-versus-pedestrian crash on Highway 97 near milepost 200 in northern Klamath County.

According to the preliminary investigation, a white Freightliner commercial motor vehicle was traveling south on Highway 97 when it struck a pedestrian standing in the southbound lane of travel. OSP identified the pedestrian as Scott Henry Beggio, 67, of Klamath Falls.

 
 

Investigators believe Beggio may have been in the roadway attempting to catch his dog, which had run into the road.

Beggio was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Freightliner driver, identified by OSP as Larry Dotson, 44, of Vicksburg, Mississippi, was reportedly not injured.

The highway was impacted for about five hours while investigators worked at the scene.

 
 

OSP was assisted by the Klamath County Sheriff’s Office, Chemult Rural Fire Protection District and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
