Weekend Weather Shift Could Affect Outdoor Events
A cooler, breezier pattern could arrive just as outdoor weekend events get underway.
MEDFORD, Ore. — A noticeable shift toward cooler, breezier and somewhat wetter weather could affect outdoor plans across Southern Oregon and Northern California this weekend, even though no major weather alerts have been issued for the region.
The National Weather Service in Medford says seasonal warmth will continue Thursday ahead of a cold front expected late Thursday night into Friday. Behind the front, temperatures are forecast to fall below normal across the area, with breezy to gusty winds possible, especially east of the Cascades.
Rain chances appear most likely west of the Cascades and along the coast, with some lighter, more scattered chances reaching parts of the east side. The broader regional impact will likely be the sharp cooldown, along with breezy conditions and a less summer-like feel for outdoor events.
The timing overlaps with a busy weekend of outdoor activities across the region.
Events that could see some weather-related impacts include Kruise of Klamath in Klamath Falls, Movies in the Park events in Medford and Central Point, Medford Rogues kids camp and baseball against the Healdsburg Prune Packers, horse racing at Grants Pass Downs, Symphony at the Britt, Jim Belushi Comedy on the Rogue and dwarf car racing at Southern Oregon Speedway.
Some event organizers are already making changes. Chalk About Medford has been moved from this weekend to July 11 because of the expected weather. Medford Pride is scheduled indoors at Rogue X and should be less affected by the forecast.
The current forecast does not point to a major storm or a widespread washout. Instead, it shows a sharp change from midweek heat to cooler, unsettled conditions arriving Friday and continuing into Saturday for many communities.
In Medford, temperatures are forecast to fall from the 90s Wednesday and Thursday into the 70s Friday and the upper 60s Saturday, with rain chances in the forecast. Grants Pass is also expected to cool from the 90s to the 70s Friday and low 70s Saturday, with some shower chances.
Klamath Falls is forecast to drop from the 80s into the 70s Friday and upper 50s Saturday. Lakeview could see highs fall from the 80s into the upper 50s by Saturday, with rain chances and much cooler overnight temperatures.
Along the coast, Brookings is expected to stay cool with shower chances Friday and Saturday. In Northern California, Yreka is forecast to drop from the upper 80s and low 90s into the 70s Friday and 60s Saturday, though current rain chances there appear more limited.
The shift also extends north of the region. Eugene, where a major Savannah Bananas event is scheduled at Autzen Stadium this weekend, is forecast to drop from the 90s Wednesday to the 60s Friday and Saturday, with rain chances in the forecast.
As of Wednesday afternoon, the National Weather Service had not issued land-based watches, warnings or advisories for Oregon or California in its Medford forecast area. Forecasters described expected rainfall amounts as generally light, though Saturday is expected to be the coolest day of the forecast period.
Still, the timing could matter for outdoor events, especially those relying on dry fields, dry pavement, outdoor seating, sound equipment, vendors or spectators standing outside for long periods.
People planning to attend outdoor events this weekend should check official event pages before heading out, watch for schedule changes and prepare for cooler weather, light rain in some areas and breezy conditions.
HiveWire Daily will continue monitoring the forecast and event updates as the weekend approaches.
