PHOENIX, Ore. — Phoenix police are asking residents to stay alert and give a bear plenty of space as it continues to linger in the Fern Valley Road and Grove Road area.

According to the Phoenix Police Department, the same bear highlighted last week remains in the area and appears to be growing less afraid of humans, traffic and the city environment.

Police said officers have been monitoring the bear’s movements in an effort to keep both the public and the animal safe. On Wednesday morning, the department also consulted with an Oregon State Police Game Trooper.

Authorities are asking residents not to approach the bear or try to get close for photos. Police also asked people not to head to the area specifically to look for the animal, saying that could increase the chance of an unnecessary encounter.

The bear cannot be relocated at this time, according to police. Officials warned that if the animal becomes too comfortable around homes and people in the neighborhood, it could eventually lead to the bear being euthanized.

Residents are being urged to keep pets supervised, secure trash and other attractants, and stay aware of their surroundings.

Anyone concerned about the bear’s movements or behavior is asked to call 541-776-7206.
