Teen Injured in Early Morning Shooting in Medford

Suspect Arrested After Argument Leads to Gun Discharge, Police Say

MEDFORD, Ore. — A juvenile was seriously injured in an early morning shooting Sunday, and a suspect has been taken into custody following a search in the surrounding area, according to the Medford Police Department.

Officers responded at approximately 2:21 a.m. on March 29 to a reported shooting near the intersection of Crater Lake Avenue and Stevens Street. Upon arrival, officers located a 16-year-old male suffering from a single gunshot wound to the neck.

Police immediately began providing medical aid until personnel from Mercy Flights and the Medford Fire Department arrived. The victim was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries and is expected to recover.

Officers quickly established a perimeter and saturated the surrounding area. During the search, police located a suspect in the Providence parking garage, where the individual was taken into custody without incident. A firearm was also recovered.

The Medford Police Department Criminal Investigations Division responded to lead the investigation. Detectives determined the suspect and victim did not know each other prior to the incident and became involved in an argument. During the confrontation, investigators said the suspect produced a handgun and struck the victim with it. While doing so, the firearm discharged, striking the victim in the neck.

The suspect was identified as 21-year-old Phoenix Wood. He was lodged at the Jackson County Jail on a charge of Assault in the Second Degree.

The case remains under active investigation. No additional information has been released.
