DUII Suspect Arrested After Crashing Stolen Truck in Bend

Driver found passed out behind the wheel following pursuit on Highway 97

BEND, Ore. — A 21-year-old Portland man was arrested Tuesday morning following a suspected impaired driving incident, a brief pursuit, and a crash involving a stolen vehicle in Bend, according to a joint release from law enforcement agencies.

At approximately 7:36 a.m., deputies with the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a possible impaired driver traveling southbound on U.S. Highway 97 toward Bend. A caller reported the vehicle was weaving and unable to maintain a consistent speed.

Deputies located a Ford F-350 that had sideswiped the median on the Bend Parkway near Empire Avenue. During a traffic stop, deputies identified the driver as Jaiden Robert Telford, 21, of Portland. While deputies were speaking with Telford and requesting his driver’s license, he fled the stop and continued southbound on Highway 97 at a high rate of speed. Deputies lost sight of the vehicle.

At approximately 8:05 a.m., officers with Bend Police Department responded to a reported crash near Northeast Eighth Street and Bennington Lane. The reporting party stated one of the drivers appeared intoxicated and was unable to exit the vehicle.

Officers and deputies determined the involved vehicle was the same Ford F-350 that had eluded deputies earlier. For safety reasons, law enforcement pinned the truck and found Telford passed out behind the wheel. Officers believed he was experiencing an overdose and administered multiple doses of Narcan. Telford was transported to St. Charles–Bend for medical treatment.

Investigators later determined the Ford F-350 had been reported stolen out of Multnomah County. The driver of the second vehicle involved in the crash was not injured.

Northeast Eighth Street was temporarily closed during the response. Oregon State Police assisted with the crash and DUII investigation.

Telford was arrested on charges of Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants (DUII), Attempt to Elude, and Reckless Driving.
