LANE COUNTY, Ore. — A Lane County Sheriff’s deputy and a nearby resident rescued an injured passenger from a burning vehicle early Sunday morning after a single-vehicle crash sent the car down a steep ravine east of Crow, according to the Lane County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded around 1 a.m. on December 21 to reports of a crash in the 26400 block of Crow Road. The first deputy on scene found the vehicle approximately 20 feet down an embankment and engulfed in flames. Both the driver and a passenger were outside the vehicle, with the passenger suffering significant injuries and unable to walk while positioned dangerously close to the fire.

The deputy, assisted by a nearby resident, climbed down the wet and muddy embankment and pulled the injured passenger to safety. Both occupants were transported by medics to a local hospital for treatment.

A preliminary investigation determined the driver, Tamika Rose Luttrell, 18, of Harrisburg, attempted to pass another vehicle while navigating a corner in a marked no-passing zone. Authorities said the vehicle struck a tree head-on before rolling down the embankment.

Luttrell was arrested on charges of reckless driving, recklessly endangering another person, and assault in the fourth degree.

The sheriff’s office credited Lane Fire Authority and area residents for assisting at the scene.

The investigation remains ongoing.
