Pedestrian Killed After Being Struck While Crossing Washburn Way

Sheriff’s Office says victim was using electric wheelchair outside marked crosswalk

KLAMATH FALLS — A 76-year-old man was killed Wednesday after being struck by a pickup truck while attempting to cross Washburn Way in an electric wheelchair, according to the Klamath County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were dispatched on December 17 to a reported motor vehicle crash with injuries near the intersection of Washburn Way and Laverne Avenue. Initial reports indicated a vehicle had struck a pedestrian operating an electric wheelchair.

Investigators determined that the wheelchair was operated by Charles Miller, 76, of Klamath Falls, who was attempting to cross Washburn Way outside of a marked crosswalk when he was struck by a 2007 Ford F-150. The pickup was driven by Felix Gonzalez-Garcia, 53, also of Klamath Falls.

Miller was transported to Sky Lakes Medical Center, where he was later pronounced deceased.

The crash remains under investigation.

The sheriff’s office was assisted at the scene by Klamath County Fire District No. 1, the Klamath Falls Police Department, and Oregon State Police.

Authorities said additional information will be released as it becomes available.
