Veterans Can Soon Display Recognition Plates on Motorcycles and Mopeds
Oregon veterans will have a new way to show their service beginning Jan. 1, 2026, when the Oregon Driver and Motor Vehicle Services (DMV) launches veteran recognition plates for motorcycles and mopeds. The new option was authorized under Senate Bill 159.
Oregon has offered veteran recognition plates for passenger vehicles since 2008 through a partnership between the Oregon Department of Transportation and the Oregon Department of Veterans’ Affairs. The expansion brings motorcycle and moped riders into the program for the first time.
The plate design features an American flag on a white background, a four-letter configuration, and the word “VETERAN” centered along the bottom. Each customer will receive a single plate for the rear of the vehicle. Personal decals cannot be added.
Fees include the standard motorcycle or moped plate or replacement plate costs, plus a $2.50 annual surcharge. Net proceeds from the surcharge support the Oregon Veterans’ Homes Trust.
Veteran recognition plates are available only to those who can verify honorable military service. Traditionally, applicants have provided documents such as a DD214, DD215, or WD AGO Form 53. Under House Bill 2559, passed in 2025, DMV will now accept a Summary of Benefits Letter from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs as standalone proof of veteran status.
The Summary of Benefits Letter can now be used to apply the veteran designation to a driver’s license, permit, or ID card, as well as for service branch plates, blank veteran plates, motorcycle and moped plates, and Vietnam Veterans of America plates.
More information about license plates and eligibility is available on the Oregon DMV website.
