Raiders’ Title Defense Ends

Southern Oregon was eliminated from the NAIA Softball World Series after back-to-back losses Monday, closing the season with a 45-15 record.

COLUMBUS, Ga. — Southern Oregon’s national title defense came to an end Monday at the NAIA Softball World Series after the Raiders dropped back-to-back games at the South Commons Complex.

The No. 3-seeded Raiders lost 5-2 to No. 2 Southeastern of Florida in the afternoon, then fell 3-1 to No. 8 Indiana Wesleyan late Monday night. The losses ended Southern Oregon’s season at 45-15.

Southern Oregon entered the day on a 16-game winning streak and had been averaging nearly eight runs during that stretch, but the Raiders could not generate enough offense in either game to extend their World Series run.

The loss to Southeastern moved SOU into an elimination path that would have required five straight wins to capture a fifth national championship. The Raiders’ season ended hours later against Indiana Wesleyan.

Against Indiana Wesleyan, sophomore left-hander Avery Toole held Southern Oregon to six hits in a complete-game effort. The Raiders’ lone run came in the fourth inning after a single, an error, a bunt single and an infield single by Kalea Thomas brought home pinch-runner Brianna McCoy.

Southern Oregon had chances to change the game, but left the bases loaded in the fourth and stranded runners in scoring position in three other innings. The Raiders had runners at second and third after Ari Williams doubled in the first inning and brought the potential tying run to the plate after Vanessa Lang tripled in the seventh.

Toole finished with seven strikeouts and worked around three Indiana Wesleyan errors.

SOU sophomore Ayla Davies, last year’s World Series MVP, went the distance in the circle against Indiana Wesleyan. She allowed five hits in the loss. Earlier in the day against Southeastern, three of the four runs charged to Davies were unearned.

Indiana Wesleyan took a 2-0 lead in the third inning after a walk and bunt single set up Morgan Yeater’s sacrifice fly and Maddie Martin’s RBI double. The Wildcats added an insurance run in the seventh on a two-out hit by Sara Ruble.

The day marked a rare postseason setback for Southern Oregon under head coach Jessica Pistole. Since the Raiders reached their first NAIA Opening Round in 2016, they have played 81 national tournament games. Before Monday, SOU had not lost two games in the same national tournament year.

The Raiders had also won 15 of their previous 16 World Series elimination games since 2019, the year Southern Oregon captured the first of its four national championships.

Indiana Wesleyan advanced as one of five teams still alive in the tournament. Southeastern and top-seeded Madonna of Michigan remained unbeaten in the bracket.

Southern Oregon will look toward 2027 without five seniors from this year’s roster: Lang, Williams, Tatiana Blas, Michelle Hara and Gabby Heiken. Heiken leaves the program as a two-time national champion, while Lang, Williams, Blas and Hara were part of last year’s championship run.
