New Border Monument Added On U.S. 101

The new California welcome monument in Del Norte County follows a similar project along Highway 199 and is part of Caltrans’ Clean California beautification efforts.

DEL NORTE COUNTY, Calif. – Travelers entering California from Oregon along U.S. 101 now have a new welcome monument marking one of the state’s northern gateways.

The project was made possible through Caltrans and Clean California, a statewide beautification initiative focused on improving public spaces, removing litter and creating a stronger first impression for travelers and communities.

The new U.S. 101 monument follows another recently highlighted welcome monument along Highway 199 at the California-Oregon border. Together, the projects are intended to refresh key entry points into California’s North Coast region.

Caltrans officials said the Del Norte County project helps create a more welcoming public space for people entering the state. Members of the public also had a chance to weigh in on the monument design through a public survey.

A ribbon cutting is expected to be held in the coming weeks to officially celebrate the new border monuments.

Clean California is a $1.2 billion, multiyear initiative led by Caltrans. Since launching in July 2021, the program has funded 314 beautification projects statewide, with 191 completed, according to Caltrans.

The agency said Caltrans and its partners have also removed more than 3.4 million cubic yards of litter, hosted more than 650 free dump days, enlisted more than 72,000 community cleanup volunteers and created more than 18,000 jobs through the program.
