Weed Lumber Mill Closing; 140 Workers Jobless

Roseburg to Shift Veneer Production to Upgraded Oregon Mills

Roseburg Forest Products announced on Wednesday that it has ceased operations at its Weed, Calif., veneer plant effective December 3, 2025. Veneer production will be consolidated at the company’s Oregon facilities, where new high-efficiency equipment has recently been installed.

The transition, according to Roseburg, is intended to strengthen the company’s competitiveness in engineered wood and softwood plywood markets. The closure follows the company’s decision in September to exit the hardwood plywood market, part of a broader strategy to focus resources on a more streamlined product portfolio.

“With the investments we have made in our Riddle and Coquille, Ore., veneer and softwood plywood mills, we have repositioned these operations as well as our Riddle Engineered Wood mill to be among the most cost-competitive mills in the industry,” said Stuart Gray, Roseburg president and CEO. “These actions are essential for Roseburg to remain a strong producer and competitor against significant volumes of low-cost imported products that continue to affect North American wood products markets.”

The Weed mill has operated for nearly 40 years. Approximately 140 employees were affected by the closure. The company said workers will receive compensation and healthcare coverage for 60 days and will be encouraged to apply for open positions at Roseburg’s other locations. Dedicated support and resources will be provided during the transition.

“We recognize the impact this decision has on our team members and the Weed community and appreciate the contributions our people have made,” Gray said. The company is evaluating future uses for the site that could continue to support jobs and economic activity in the region.

Roseburg will continue fulfilling renewable power generation contracts associated with the site’s biomass power plant.

The company emphasized its ongoing commitment to the Weed community, including its $7 million contribution to establish a local foundation, continued support for the Weed Community Scholarship Fund, and the rent-free firehouse the company provides for the City of Weed Fire Department.
