Pedestrian Killed in Highway 97 Crash

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. — An 18-year-old Klamath Falls resident died Saturday morning after being struck by a commercial vehicle on Highway 97, according to Oregon State Police.
OSP said troopers responded at 4:14 a.m. on Saturday, May 16, to a vehicle versus pedestrian fatal crash on Highway 97 near milepost 264 in Klamath County, near Klamath Falls.
According to the preliminary investigation, a white Freightliner commercial motor vehicle driven by Shawn Christopher Kunze, 43, of Yreka, California, was traveling southbound on Highway 97 when it struck a pedestrian in the roadway.
OSP identified the pedestrian as Modoc Shadley, 18, of Klamath Falls. Investigators said Shadley was reportedly wearing dark clothing and walking in the southbound travel lane for an unknown reason.
Shadley was pronounced dead at the scene.
Approximate Location
Kunze was transported to an area hospital for evaluation, according to OSP.
The highway was affected for about two hours while investigators worked at the scene.
OSP was assisted by the Klamath County Sheriff’s Office, Klamath Falls Police Department, and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
