Arrests, Eluding Case Highlight Busy Week for JPD
Jacksonville Police reported traffic-related arrests, a dirt bike eluding case, fire-related calls, and community safety events during the week of May 11–17.
JACKSONVILLE, Ore. — Jacksonville Police Department responded to several public safety calls during the week of May 11 through May 17, including fire-related incidents, traffic stops, an eluding case, and community outreach events.
The department said one fire-related call came on Thursday, May 14, at approximately 6:09 p.m., when officers were dispatched to the 3600 block of Oregon Highway 238 for a reported grass fire.
JPD officers arrived first and confirmed active fire in the area while contacting two men at the location. According to the department, the investigation found the fire was a controlled burn being conducted by the property owner before fire season officially began on May 15.
Police said the individuals had established a fire line and had water available at the scene. Jacksonville Fire Department and Applegate Fire District personnel also responded, and the scene was turned over to fire crews.
JPD said the controlled burn was lawful, but the incident serves as a reminder that fire season is now underway.
“If you see something concerning, say something,” the department said in its update. “Working together as a community can potentially help prevent a major wildfire.”
On Friday, May 15, at approximately 9:42 a.m., a JPD officer conducted a traffic stop near the Chevron station on 5th Street. Police said the male driver was found to be driving while criminally suspended and without the required ignition interlock device stemming from a previous DUII conviction. The driver also failed to provide proof of insurance, according to JPD.
The driver was arrested and lodged at the Jackson County Jail on a misdemeanor charge of driving while suspended.

On Saturday, May 16, at approximately 4:47 p.m., a JPD officer observed a red dirt bike without license plates near West California Street and West Main Street. Police said the officer attempted to stop the rider, but the rider fled at a high rate of speed westbound toward Highway 238.
JPD said the pursuit was immediately terminated due to the rider’s reckless driving and public safety concerns. The rider was described as wearing a black helmet and black sweatshirt. The case remains under investigation.
Later that evening, at approximately 8:13 p.m., an officer conducted a traffic stop near Ray’s Food Place on 5th Street. Police said the male driver had an active warrant and was taken into custody with assistance from a Jackson County Sheriff’s Office deputy. The driver was lodged at the Jackson County Jail, and the vehicle was impounded.
On Sunday, May 17, at approximately 11:48 a.m., JPD responded to a reported structure fire at a retail toy store at 180 West California Street. Police said an officer arrived within one minute of dispatch and found no active fire.
Jacksonville Fire Department personnel responded and checked the area. Based on witness statements, police said a small fire had occurred next to the building but was quickly extinguished by a nearby restaurant employee before emergency personnel arrived.
JPD said the quick action helped prevent the situation from escalating. The incident remains under investigation.
In addition to calls for service, Jacksonville officers also participated in two community events during the week: a Wildfire Preparedness Forum at Jacksonville Fire Department Station 19 and a True Crime Symposium at the Brigham Knoll Campus.
The department said the events reflect its continued focus on community engagement, education, and public safety.
