ODOT to Host Open House on New Hawthorne Crossing in Bend

The Dec. 2 open house will showcase updated bridge designs and offer a chance to meet the project team.

BEND, Ore. — The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) is inviting community members to learn more about the updated plans for the Hawthorne Crossing project at an upcoming open house on Tuesday, Dec. 2. The event will take place from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Dogwood at The Pine Shed, located at 821 NE Second Street in Bend.

The open house will give residents an opportunity to review the new bridge design, meet the project team, ask questions, and share comments about the project’s next steps.

On Sept. 24, the Bend City Council selected a truss-style bridge for Hawthorne Crossing — a structure that will serve as a dedicated bicycle and pedestrian connection between east and west Bend. The truss design was chosen as a lower-cost and lower-maintenance option compared to a previously considered single-tower cable-stay bridge. The design also allows for easier construction and incorporates a mountain-inspired aesthetic to reflect the character of Bend.

During the open house, ODOT will display updated visuals of the truss bridge and outline how the crossing will integrate into Bend’s broader bike network. Subject matter experts and members of the design and engineering team will be on hand to answer questions.

ODOT is leading the full design and construction process in coordination with the City of Bend to ensure the project aligns with city priorities and community values.

For those unable to attend in person, an online open house will be available from Nov. 19 through Dec. 9. Visitors will be able to view bridge designs, review project materials, and submit comments through ODOT’s website.

Anyone interested in receiving ongoing project updates can sign up for ODOT’s email list at the link provided on the agency’s project page.
