LAKEVIEW, Ore. — The Lake County Sheriff’s Office will host a youth hands-on ATV, motorcycle and side-by-side safety evaluation course later this month at the Lake County Fairgrounds.

The event is scheduled for Saturday, May 30, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the fairgrounds, located at 1900 N. 4th Street in Lakeview. The course is open to youth ages 6 through 15, and pre-registration is required.

According to the sheriff’s office, a parent or guardian must be present for all classes. The event is co-hosted by the Lake County Chapter of the Oregon Hunters Association, which will provide lunch. Water will also be available throughout the day.

Class times are scheduled by vehicle type. The motorcycle class begins at 9 a.m., the ATV class begins at 10 a.m. and the side-by-side class begins at 1 p.m.

The ATV and side-by-side class is open to youth ages 6 through 15. Registration must be completed online at oregonatvsafety.com. Participants are required to download and read The Rider Guide, then print and bring a completed waiver form to the class.

The cost is $25 for Oregon residents and $75 for non-residents, payable online.

Participants in the ATV and side-by-side class must provide and properly fit their own ATV or side-by-side. Riders are also required to wear a DOT-approved helmet, goggles, gloves, boots, a long-sleeve shirt and long pants. The class takes approximately two hours to complete.

The motorcycle class is also for youth ages 6 through 15 and requires online registration through ysep.omraoffroad.com. The cost is $20, payable online to the Oregon Motorcycle Riders Association. Riders must provide and properly fit their own motorcycle and have completed the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department online Safety Education Course before attending.

The only prerequisite for both classes is completion of the Ride ATV Oregon online course, which must be finished before attending the hands-on evaluation. The course is free, completed online at rideatvoregon.org, and takes approximately one to two hours. A temporary completion card may be printed after the course is finished.
