Grants Pass Fire Restrictions Begin Friday

Fire season rules take effect May 15 as the city enters low fire danger

GRANTS PASS, Ore. — Fire season restrictions will take effect inside the City of Grants Pass beginning Friday, May 15, at 12:01 a.m., as the city enters the 2026 fire season under a “Low” fire danger level.

According to Grants Pass Fire/Rescue, the city’s adopted Municipal Code 9.15 Regulated Closure Fire Restrictions will be in effect once fire season begins.

The restrictions apply within Grants Pass city limits and are intended to reduce the risk of human-caused fires as warmer and drier conditions return to Southern Oregon.

Under the fire season rules, smoking is prohibited in areas with flammable vegetation. Open fires, including campfires, cooking fires, and warming fires, are also prohibited unless they are in locations designated by the Fire Marshal.

Natural gas, propane, and charcoal barbecues and smokers remain allowed. Natural gas and propane ornamental fires are also still permitted.

Power saw use will be allowed all day while the fire danger level remains low. Each power saw must have one shovel and one fire extinguisher with at least an 8-ounce capacity nearby. A fire watch of at least one hour is required after each saw is used.

Cutting, grinding, and welding metal in areas with flammable vegetation will also be allowed all day during low fire danger. Mowing dry, cured grass is also permitted all day while conditions remain at the low level.

Motor vehicles, motorcycles, and all-terrain vehicles are only allowed on improved roads that are free of flammable vegetation, except when used for the culture and harvest of agricultural crops.

Any other spark-emitting internal combustion engine used in areas of flammable vegetation must be operated in a cleared area, with either a charged garden hose or a fire extinguisher of at least 2 ½ pounds immediately available.

The City Fire Marshal or an authorized representative may approve written modifications or waivers to the requirements.

Residents with questions about Grants Pass fire season regulations may contact the Fire Prevention Division at 541-450-6200.
