Shots Fired During Medford Break-In Attempt

Police say a man armed with an axe was shot after allegedly trying to force entry into a neighboring apartment early Tuesday morning.

MEDFORD, Ore. — Medford Police are investigating an early morning shooting after officers responded to reports of a person in mental distress and an apparent attempted break-in at an apartment complex on South Oakdale Avenue.

According to the Medford Police Department, officers were dispatched at about 4:55 a.m. Tuesday to the 600 block of South Oakdale Avenue after a caller reported a neighbor screaming and behaving erratically.

While officers were en route, police said additional information indicated the individual was attempting to break into a neighboring apartment using an axe.

Before officers arrived, the occupant of that apartment discharged a firearm, striking the suspect.

Police identified the injured man as 22-year-old Julian Moon Haight. Officers located Haight suffering from a gunshot wound to an extremity and provided emergency medical aid until he was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

No other injuries were reported.

The incident remains under investigation. Police said additional information, including any potential criminal charges, will be released as it becomes available.
