Pedestrian Killed in Douglas County Crash on Highway 42

Oregon State Police say Eugene woman died after being struck while crossing near the Highway 99 and Grant Smith Road area late Saturday night.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ore. – A 40-year-old Eugene woman died Saturday night after being struck by a vehicle on Highway 42 in Douglas County, according to the Oregon State Police.

Troopers responded to the crash at about 10:59 p.m. April 25 near milepost 76.

Preliminary findings indicate a red Ford Focus was traveling westbound on Highway 42 with a green light when it struck pedestrian Vivian Kuntz, 40, of Eugene. Investigators said Kuntz was crossing from Grant Smith Road toward Highway 99 without a walk signal.

Kuntz was pronounced dead at the scene.

 
 

The driver, Leo Thomas Durden III, 38, of Roseburg, and passenger Caitlinn Ann Durden, 35, of Roseburg, were not injured.

The highway was impacted for approximately four hours during the on-scene investigation.

Oregon State Police said assisting agencies included Central Douglas Fire and Rescue, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, the Winston Police Department, and the Oregon Department of Transportation.

OSP Reports Fatal Hit-and-Run in Hood River County

In a separate incident reported Monday, Oregon State Police said a 24-year-old Hermiston man was killed early Sunday morning in an apparent hit-and-run crash on Interstate 84 in Hood River County.

Investigators said Hunter Clay Miller was walking in the travel lane near milepost 66 when he was struck by an unknown westbound vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A black Harley-Davidson motorcycle was found several miles east of the crash, though investigators said it is unknown whether Miller was associated with it.
