COLONIAL VALLEY, Ore. – A floating ember from an outdoor fire pit is believed to have sparked a small house fire Monday afternoon near Colonial Valley, according to Rural Metro Fire.

Crews responded at 1:39 p.m. April 27 to a home on Donaldson Road near Serenity Lane.

Fire officials said the ember likely landed on a gardening table, causing flames that climbed the outside wall of the residence.

The occupant had already mostly extinguished the fire before firefighters arrived.

Crews inspected the attic area and confirmed no hidden heat remained.

No injuries were reported.

Grants Pass Fire, AMR, and Oregon State Police also assisted at the scene.

Rural Metro Fire reminded residents that outdoor fire pits should always be attended or fully extinguished when not in use. Officials also recommend using a screen to prevent hot embers from escaping and landing on nearby flammable items.
