Pedestrian Killed at Central Point I-5 Onramp

Jackson County STAR Team investigating fatal Wednesday evening collision

CENTRAL POINT, Ore. — A pedestrian was killed Wednesday evening after being struck by a passenger truck in a marked crosswalk at the northbound onramp of Interstate 5 Exit 33, according to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.

Emergency Communications of Southern Oregon received a 911 call at approximately 5:39 p.m. reporting a pedestrian had been struck at the intersection of Pine Street and the I-5 Exit 33 northbound onramp. Deputies from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, along with officers from the Central Point Police Department, Jackson County Fire District 3, and Mercy Flights, responded to the scene.

Investigators said a 65-year-old Central Point man driving a 2022 GMC Sierra struck a 48-year-old man who was in the crosswalk. The victim, who was from the Las Vegas area, was transported to a local hospital by Mercy Flights, where he was pronounced deceased approximately one hour after the crash.

The Jackson County Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction Team was requested to conduct a full investigation. The STAR Team includes investigators from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Medford Police Department, Central Point Police Department, Ashland Police Department, and the Jackson County District Attorney’s Office.

The roadway was closed for approximately three hours while investigators processed the scene. Jackson County Roads assisted with traffic control during the closure.

Authorities said the driver is cooperating with the investigation. Based on preliminary findings, no criminal charges are being considered at this time. Once the investigation is complete, findings will be submitted to the District Attorney’s Office for final review.

The names of the driver and victim will not be released unless criminal charges are filed. No additional information was available as of Wednesday night.
