Escaped Field Burn Contained East of Bend

Crews stop 6.6-acre fire before it spreads beyond property

BEND, Ore. — Fire crews quickly contained an escaped field burn east of Bend on Monday afternoon, preventing the fire from spreading beyond the property, according to Bend Fire & Rescue.

Crews were dispatched to the fire off Powell Butte Highway after wind carried flames beyond containment lines during a permitted ditch burn. Firefighters worked to stop the spread and ultimately contained the fire at approximately 6.6 acres.

The fire burned primarily pasture land, along with some trees, brush piles, and surrounding vegetation. No damage to structures or fencing was reported.

Bend Fire & Rescue was assisted by Alfalfa Fire, the Oregon Department of Forestry, the Bureau of Land Management, and the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, which provided traffic control.

Officials said the property owner had a valid burn permit and had followed most requirements, including checking that burning was allowed for the day. However, crews noted the burn did not have sufficient water on hand to safely manage the fire when conditions changed.

Outdoor burning is currently allowed through May 31 outside Bend city limits, though restrictions may change depending on weather conditions. Burning may also be prohibited on days when winds are forecast to exceed 20 mph.

Officials remind residents to always check daily burn conditions and ensure adequate water and resources are available before starting any burn.
