Basin Transit, KCC Partner on CDL Training Effort

Basin Transit Service says a Klamath Community College staff member completed its in-house training program and earned a CDL with passenger endorsement.

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – Basin Transit Service says it has partnered with Klamath Community College on a workforce development effort aimed at expanding local transportation capacity.

According to Basin Transit Service, the partnership helped a Klamath Community College staff member complete commercial driver license training and earn a CDL with a passenger endorsement through the agency’s in-house training program.

Basin Transit Service said Klamath Community College had been unable to secure a regional training option capable of preparing a staff member for the testing required to obtain the endorsement. In response, BTS said it opened access to its existing internal training pipeline, which is used to develop future transit operators.

The college employee needed the credential in order to operate a vehicle recently acquired by Klamath Community College, according to BTS. The agency said the vehicle is intended to help expand mobility options for students and student-athletes.

BTS said the employee joined a scheduled training cohort, completed the required instruction and preparation, and successfully earned the license and endorsement.

According to the agency, the partnership is intended to do more than support one driver. Basin Transit Service said the effort reflects a broader strategy of using existing public-sector training resources and workforce development programs to help address community transportation needs.

BTS also said reliable transportation plays a wider role in supporting education, workforce participation, health care access and regional economic stability.

The agency said the effort comes at a time when many communities are facing shortages of qualified transit operators and CDL-certified drivers. Basin Transit Service said its internal training program is designed to help build a more sustainable local pipeline of transportation professionals for the Klamath Basin.
