PROSPECT, Ore. — Firefighters stopped the spread of a wildfire southeast of Prospect after an overnight response to the Carney Flat Fire, according to the Oregon Department of Forestry Southwest Oregon District.

ODF said firefighters responded Friday night after the fire was reported in the Carney Flat area. When resources arrived, the fire was estimated at about six acres.

After working overnight, crews were able to halt the fire’s spread and build line around the incident, holding it at 23 acres.

Additional resources remained assigned to the fire Saturday as firefighters continued mop-up work. ODF said crews had constructed hose line across most of the fire area to improve water access while working to extinguish remaining hot spots.

Firefighters are expected to remain assigned to the incident until the fire is fully mopped up and all hot spots are out.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

ODF said it does not expect to provide additional updates on the Carney Flat Fire unless conditions significantly change.
