K9 Helps Capture Burglary Suspect
Police say suspect surrendered after K9 warnings during early morning church burglary response
GRANTS PASS, Ore. — A burglary suspect was taken into custody early Tuesday morning after a police K9 helped officers secure the scene at a Grants Pass church.
According to the Grants Pass Police Department, officers were dispatched around 12:30 a.m. on March 10 following a report of a burglary in progress at New Song Church.
Responding patrol officers, including Interim Corporal Lexi Pittman and her K9 partner Kick, established a perimeter around the building while searching for the suspect. Police said K9 announcements were made at the scene, which are intended to encourage compliance before a K9 deployment becomes necessary.
The suspect, later identified as 40-year-old Michael Hood, exited the building on his own after the announcements were made. Officers took Hood into custody without further incident.
He was lodged at the Josephine County Jail on a charge of Burglary in the Second Degree.
Police say the incident highlights the role K9 teams play in local law enforcement operations, assisting officers in potentially dangerous situations and helping bring calls to a safe resolution.
