Cal-Ore Plans Fiber Expansion in Weed

The Siskiyou County broadband provider says engineering is underway for a fiber-to-the-premise project intended to serve most homes and businesses in the City of Weed.

WEED, Calif. — Cal-Ore Communications has announced plans to expand broadband service in Siskiyou County with a fiber-optic overlay of the City of Weed.

The project is an expansion of Cal-Ore’s fiber-to-the-premise network, also known as FTTP, with the goal of making fiber-optic internet service available to most homes and businesses in Weed.

Cal-Ore said large-scale engineering for the project is already underway, with the goal of beginning customer connections in fall 2026. The company said it plans to offer competitive broadband plans and expects to begin offering early sign-up incentives to residents and businesses soon.

“Cal-Ore is thrilled to announce that we are bringing a faster, more reliable broadband experience to the people of Weed,” said Rodney Wood, president of Cal-Ore. “As everyone knows, high-speed broadband has become absolutely essential for both homes and businesses — it’s the backbone for everything from work and education to leisure activities.”

Wood said the company’s goal is to make sure people in Weed have access to the connectivity they need for daily life and business.

“Our goal is to ensure that everyone in the City of Weed has access to the connectivity they need to thrive in today’s digital world,” Wood said. “A fast, dependable broadband connection makes a real difference, whether you’re collaborating on a work project, pursuing online learning, or simply streaming your favorite shows.”

Wood added that Cal-Ore is looking forward to making the enhanced service available.

“We’re excited for what the future holds,” he said.

During engineering and construction, Cal-Ore said families and businesses should expect to see an increased presence of company vehicles and contractors in the area. The company said crews will work as quickly and safely as possible to complete the project.

Cal-Ore has served Siskiyou and Modoc counties for more than 76 years. The company currently provides service to area businesses, public safety entities, local municipalities, agriculture, community organizations, and residents.

The company also said it supports several local organizations, including volunteer fire departments, community centers, grange halls, little leagues, swim days, senior programs, school programs, 4-H, FFA, and other community organizations.

People within the City of Weed will be able to sign up through Cal-Ore’s website in the coming weeks.
